Our sins may be nothing like Jezebel's, but all sin is unacceptable and we have all greatly needed God's patience and longsuffering, both in the collective sense (the whole world) and individually. As Christians we can look back on the time when we were rebellious toward God, and have great, heartfelt thanks that He was so patient with us (2 Peter 3:9, 14-15). But for those who refuse too long, it is a sad thought that they will remember many opportunities to repent, and deeply regret their failure to do so, forever. Everyday the newspapers' obituary pages show that people die unexpectedly, at all ages. No one knows how long he will live, but he should know that Hebrews 9:27 plainly says all will die, and then all will be judged. God gave His Son to the world, allowed Him to be crucified, so we could have forgiveness of sins. He planned this before the creation, knowing man would have need of forgiveness. And He has patiently waited to allow many opportunities for man to repent and accept this wonderful gift--salvation through Jesus. But no one knows if today will be the last opportunity for any one individual, or for everyone (2 Peter 3:10). Acts 17:30 states that God commands everyone to repent. In Revelation 2:20-23 Jezebel and others had refused to repent. The Lord indicates His long-suffering toward them is nearing an end. Repentance is the most urgent matter for everyone to consider, while the opportunity is still available! |
