Christ's Infancy Fulfilled The Prophetic Word!
Joseph took Mary and the baby Jesus and left Bethlehem that night for the
land of Egypt. An angel of the Lord had appeared to Joseph in a dream and
warned him to arise from his bed, take Jesus and his mother, Mary, and
leave the country. King Herod was looking for the child to destroy him
(Matthew 2:13-15)!
They stayed in Egypt until an angel of the Lord again appeared in another
of Joseph's dreams telling him to return home with the young child and
Mary. King Herod had died and they that sought the young child's life were
also dead (Matthew 2:19-23).
It was sad that Jesus had to be protected from the wicked King Herod even
when He was a baby! King Herod was troubled by wise men from the east looking
for Him, the newly born King of the Jews, whom they had come from afar
to worship (Matthew 3:1-8).
King Herod wanted his own son to be the next king! Herod actually did kill
all the children in Bethlehem and nearby from two years old and under hoping
to destroy Jesus as the heir of the throne. (Matthew
2:16-18; Jeremiah
31:15).
When Joseph and Mary returned with Jesus from Egypt, they found
Herod's son, Archelaus, was ruling in Judaea. They were afraid of him,
too. So they went on up to Nazareth of Galilee. They lived in Nazareth
until Jesus was grown and known as the "carpenter's son" (Matthew
13:55). These events were the fulfillment of prophecies which said,
"Out of Egypt have I called my Son" (Hosea
11:1), "He shall be called a Nazarene" (Matthew
2:23), and "A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping"
(Jeremiah 31:15,
Matthew 2:15, 17-18,
23). Not only does the fulfillment of these prophecies indicate Jesus
is the Christ, the Son of God and our Savior, but they also indicate that
the Bible is the divinely inspired word of God (cf. 2
Peter 1:20-21)!
