Jesus Gave The Jews A Sign Of His Resurrection
"What sign shewest thou unto us?" asked the Jews after they saw Jesus clean
up the Temple at Jerusalem (John
2:13-22). Jesus gave them a real sign. He said, "Destroy this temple,
and in three days I will raise it up." Cattlemen and bankers were commercializing
on religion around the Temple. They were selling sheep, doves and oxen
and conducting a currency exchange. Our Lord ordered them out, saying,
"Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise."
Rebuilding the Temple in three days was a ridiculous idea to the Jews.
They had spent forty-six years building what was there! But they would
have thought His sign really foolish had they realized He was speaking
of the temple of His body. Anyone knows that to rise from the dead just
takes more authority and power than to merely rebuild a house of worship.
But when Jesus was risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He
had said this. They believed then the Scripture and the word which Jesus
had taught them.
Religious people around us today ought to believe the Scripture and
the word which Jesus taught. If they would, they would not only believe
He arose from the dead in three days, but also they would stop their church
yard sales, bake sales, rummage sales, bazaars and car washes. They would
cleanse their spiritual houses, both their church buildings and their hearts!
