The Truth About Truth
Pilate, in John 18:38,
asked Christ the searing question "What is truth?" This question
is still asked today. Our society has generated a similar question
-- does truth really exist? The social forces at work today seem
to indicate that truth is event dependent and circumstantial at best.
There are efforts underway to remove any universal or standard code of
ethics. Notable differences exist between countries and nationalities
as far as truth is concerned. Characteristics once identified as
truth or unchangeable principles which governed human conduct have diminished
in importance. Today, as following the time of the Kings of Israel,
each individual is becoming a "law unto themselves." So, the question
is still pertinent today -- what is truth? Stated another way, does
absolute truth exist?. Although the answer has become very elusive,
it nonetheless remains significant even today.
The Scriptures provide evidence that supports the existence and ongoing
presence of truth. There are a few cornerstones that are dependent
upon and without truth would cause great disturbances to those that believe
in scriptural truths. Let us evaluate a few.
-
If God exists, then Truth exists. This is accurate because God is
a God of Truth, Psalms 31:5.
Likewise His Words are Truth, John
17:17. His expectations are for us to service and worship Him
in "spirit and in truth," John
4:24.
-
If Christ exists, whether during His time on earth or in Heaven, then Truth
exists. In John 14:6,
He claimed to be "the way, the truth, and the life." SO without truth,
none of those things would exist. According to James
1:18, we can become fruits of His Truth.
-
If the church exists, then Truth exists. Paul explained this to Timothy,
1 Timothy 3:15, by stating
that the church is the "pillar nd ground of the truth."
-
Truth provides us the means to purify our soul. According to 1
Peter 1:22-23 and James
1:18, truth when obeyed provides for our cleansing. Both passages
identify Christ's words are Truth. Therefore obedience to Christ
and His Word is of vital importance to His servants.
Truth is still a stable, dependable, and unchanging code. It is fact.
Truth, especially Scriptural Truth, is not formed from conjecture or on
circumstances by which humanity determines truth. God’s Truth is
absolute. There are no new definitions for universal or standard
code of ethics. God’s Word is still the basis for those that seek His acceptance
and approval.
