| Let us tell you a
little more about ourselves.
MEMBERSHIP
Our members come from all over the Chattanooga metropolitan
area. We have members who live in Brainerd and East Ridge near the
church building, We have members who live in East Brainerd, Ooltewah,
and Hixson. We have members who travel some distance from North Georgia
and Jasper, TN, to work and worship with others of like precious faith
(2 Peter 1:1). Our members are made up of all age groups from teenagers
to over 80 years of age and various groups in between. Some members
have well-established families and extended families while others are just
getting started. Currently, we have over 40 families who associate
with the North Terrace church.
PUBLIC WORSHIP
Following the examples found in the New Testament, we
assemble on the first day of every week to partake in the Lord’s
Supper, fellowship, Bible
Study, singing,
prayers,
and to give of our blessings. These assemblies
are conducted not by ritual, but are conducted in a decent and orderly
fashion (1 Corinthians 14:40).
-
Acts 2:41-42 So then, those who had received his word were
baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. They
were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship,
to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Bible Studies:
We place emphasis on the Bible during our class periods
and during our assemblies. In classes, the study may be focused through
simple workbooks or discussions. In our assemblies, the preaching
is intended to draw our attention to and encourage our obedience to scriptural
evidences.
-
Acts 17:10-12 The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas
away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue
of the Jews. Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica,
for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures
daily to see whether these things were so. Therefore many of them believed,
along with a number of prominent Greek women and men.
-
2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to
God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the
word of truth.
-
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God
and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training
in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for
every good work.
Fellowship:
Through our time together in worship, we have fellowship
with God, Christ, the Spirit, and each other. Our fellowship is based on
spiritual things and relationships rather than sharing a common meal.
Our fellowship is based on our walking before God together “in the
light” even as God and Christ did. We have fellowship with each other
when we partake of the Lord’s Supper.
-
1 John 1:5-7 This is the message we have heard from Him and
announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at
all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness,
we lie and do not practice the truth; but if we walk in the Light as He
Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood
of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
-
1 Corinthians 10:16-17 Is not the cup of blessing which we
bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break
a sharing in the body of Christ? Since there is one bread, we who
are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.
-
Philippians 1:3-5 I thank my God upon every remembrance of
you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy,
for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now,…
Lord’s Supper:
We honor Jesus Christ in accordance to His instructions
regarding remembering His sacrifice for us. We share collectively
as we partake of unleavened bread and pure grape juice (fruit of the vine)
in remembering, as did the Corinthians. This we do each first day of the
week in accord with scriptural examples.
-
Matthew 26:26-29 While they were eating, Jesus took some
bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples,
and said, Take, eat; this is My body.” And when He had taken a cup and
given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; for
this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness
of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from
now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom.
-
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 For I received from the Lord that
which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which
He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and
said, This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.
In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, This cup is
the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance
of Me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you
proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.
-
Acts 20:6-7 We sailed from Philippi after the days of Unleavened
Bread, and came to them at Troas within five days; and there we stayed
seven days. On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together
to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next
day, and he prolonged his message until midnight.
Singing:
Our singing is considered an important part of our worship
and we place emphasis upon it. When you visit us, you will find that
we teach songs in our children’s Bible classes and as a collective group.
We emphasize vocal singing to encourage each other, offer praise to God,
and follow the examples of the apostles. The Hebrew writer describes
it as “a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give
thanks to His name” in chapter 13:15.
-
Ephesians 5:18b-20 … but be filled with the Spirit, speaking
to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making
melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all
things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father;
-
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within
you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to
God.
-
Matthew 26:30 After singing a hymn, they went out to the
Mount of Olives.
Prayers:
We begin and end each worship service with a prayer.
One of the Christian males in attendance directs our thoughts in a public
prayer to make our needs and the needs of others known to God. Through
it, we also praise and acknowledge Him and we thank Him for His care.
-
Acts 1:14a These all with one mind were continually devoting
themselves to prayer…
-
Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything
by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made
known to God.
-
John 14:13-14 Whatever you ask in My name, that will
I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything
in My name, I will do it.”
-
1 Peter 3:10-12 for, the one who desires life, to love and
see good days, must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking
deceit. He must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and
pursue it. For the eyes of the lord are toward the righteous, and his ears
attend to their prayer, but the face of the lord is against those who do
evil.
Giving of our blessings:
We offer the opportunity to contribute, to return to
God a portion of our blessings, and collect it into a treasury just as
the Corinthians were instructed. We offer this opportunity only during
our Sunday services. These funds allow us to have fellowship with
others in spreading God’s Word and ensuring that the local congregational
needs are met.
-
1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Now concerning the collection
for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so do you also.
On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save,
as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come.
-
Mark 12:41-44 And He sat down opposite the treasury,
and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury;
and many rich people were putting in large sums. A poor widow came and
put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. Calling His disciples
to Him, He said to them, Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their
surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had
to live on.

HISTORY
The North Terrace church of Christ began meeting on May
2, 1971 in a small brick house on North Terrace road. In 1979, North
Terrace built its current facilities at 3701
North Terrace, Chattanooga, TN.
North Terrace church of Christ was the result of much
planning by Christians who lived in the Brainerd area rather than the result
of strife or division. The original members had been attending congregations
in North Georgia and in the Hixson area and wanted to establish a congregation
in the Brainerd area itself. In attendance were 16 people in the
first service. We now average 75 in attendance.
Since 1971, a number of gospel ministers have worked
with North Terrace including: Mack Stephens, Bill Hall, Dan Binkley, Robert
Hines, Barney Keith, Charles Bracket, and Richard Boone. During periods
between ministers, many of the men have filled the pulpit. Currently,
Perry Hurst is the minister at North Terrace. |
