The Lord’s Supper - An Expression Of Love (Perry Hurst)

Intro:  “He Loved Me So”  (Song 166 from Hymns For Our Worship)

vs.1 - Why did My Savior come to earth and to the humble go?  Why did He choose a lowly birth?  Because He loved me so!

vs.2 - Why did he drink the bitter cup of sorrow pain and woe?  Why on the cross be lifted up?  Because He loved me so!

1.  Love saw man’s hopeless condition….

Rom.3:9-12, 23 - there is none righteous, all have sinned

1Pet.2:25 - we were lost because we had strayed from the Shepherd

Eph.2:1-3 - we were dead in our sins, lost and without hope

2.  Love expressed…

Jn.3:13-18 - God sent His only begotten son

Jn.15:12-13 - the greatest expression of love

Jn.10:11-18 - the Good Shepherd gave His life for His sheep

3.  Love gives hope…

Eph.2:4-9 - we were dead but God made us alive, saved by grace through faith in Christ

Rom.5:5-11 - God loved us even though we were sinners, gives us hope through Christ and that hope will not disappoint

1Pet.1:3-9 - we have a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  We have a place in Heaven reserved for us

Conclude:  Song “He Loved Me So” vs.3 - “Till Jesus comes I’ll sing His praise and then to glory go.  And live with Him through endless days because He loved me so.”

Romans 5

6/30/19 - John McKinney

[1Co 11:23-27 ESV] 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.

The Lord’s Compassion…

Intro - Jam.5:11 - the Lord is full of compassion

    Examples concerning physical needs…

Mk.1:39-45 - moved with compassion He cleansed the leper, crowds of people began following Him
Mt.9:26-36 - Jesus was moved with compassion upon seeing a distressed or exhausted crowd who were dispirited or scattered like sheep without a shepherd
Mt.14:13-21 - large crowd following Jesus, vs.14, He feels compassion for them, heals their sick, then feeds 5000 men besides women & children
Mt.15:29-39 - read vs.29-32, moved with compassion, fed 4000 men besides women & children
Mt.20:29-34 - moved with compassion, Jesus healed two blind men

That same compassion is seen concerning our spiritual needs

Mt.18:21-27 - moved with compassion, Master forgave the debt
Lk.15:11-24 - vs.20, father saw him from a long way’s off, felt compassion, ran to him, embraced him  …  Lord stands with open arms, ready to forgive

Moved with compassion, Lord came to this earth, went through the shame and torture of being mocked, beaten, spat on, scourged & crucified
In the eyes of many, He was humiliated, nothing but an impostor, but to us we know Him as the Lord of Glory, our King, our Savior, our Master and our Hope!

4/14/19 - Dallas

[Jhn 1:29 ESV] 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

[Lev 21:17-18, 21, 23 ESV] 17 "Speak to Aaron, saying, None of your offspring throughout their generations who has a blemish may approach to offer the bread of his God. 18 For no one who has a blemish shall draw near, a man blind or lame, or one who has a mutilated face or a limb too long, ... 21 No man of the offspring of Aaron the priest who has a blemish shall come near to offer the LORD's food offerings; since he has a blemish, he shall not come near to offer the bread of his God. ... 23 but he shall not go through the veil or approach the altar, because he has a blemish, that he may not profane my sanctuaries, for I am the LORD who sanctifies them."

[Lev 22:21 ESV] 21 And when anyone offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to the LORD to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering from the herd or from the flock, to be accepted it must be perfect; there shall be no blemish in it.

[Lev 22:22-23, 25 ESV] 22 Animals blind or disabled or mutilated or having a discharge or an itch or scabs you shall not offer to the LORD or give them to the LORD as a food offering on the altar. 23 You may present a bull or a lamb that has a part too long or too short for a freewill offering, but for a vow offering it cannot be accepted. ... 25 neither shall you offer as the bread of your God any such animals gotten from a foreigner. Since there is a blemish in them, because of their mutilation, they will not be accepted for you."

[Mal 1:7-8 ESV] 7 By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, 'How have we polluted you?' By saying that the LORD's table may be despised. 8 When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the LORD of hosts.

Jesus Christ,  lamb of God without blemish

[Jhn 1:29 ESV] 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

Morally upright.  Not physically these descriptions.  But this type of man that stands upright and is morally pure and spiritually clean

[Heb 9:14 ESV] 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

[1Pe 1:19 ESV] 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
